The Project

Sioux Empire Safety Village is a unique project because it involves community business leaders, private companies and interested individuals in all the decision making. The local governmental agencies are encouraged to bring their needs and research to us so that we might support their efforts with programs and projects. At the same time Sioux Empire Safety Vilage has the freedom to work on injury  issues and prevention topics that are having significant impact on the community.

For instance, Sioux Falls is a midwestern community of 155,000 people. There is a significant number of immigrants and refugees who have decided to make Sioux Falls their home. Cultural and language barriers sometimes make it difficult during resettlement. Therefore, the Sioux Empire Safety Village has brought with the English Programs they provide, a group of multi-language presentations written, and with voice so that our new friends can learn about safety with ease. There are getting close to 100 languages and dialects spoken in Sioux Falls.

We believe that most injuries could be prevented if people learn in advance how to recognize the warning signs and modify their behavior so that they don't get themselves into situations where injuries are likley. We also understand that sometimes we still get injured whether it was becasue of our own unsafe act or the actions of someone else. Therefore we believe that everyone should take basic first aid classes to help themeslves or others when there is an injury.

If this type of organization interests you, if you find what you read and listen to on this web site of value please feel free to contact us. Maybe together we can continue to reduce the suffering and the cost of injury in America.

Sioux Empire Safety Village was first conceived in 1998 after a visit to the National Fire Academy included a field trip to the Childrens Village project in Hagerstown Maryland.  Seeing an operational, Safety Center designed to teach injury prevention to children, led us to write a concept paper which was shared with a number of Sioux Falls business people. All thought it was a good idea so a board of directors was formed, 501-C-3 status was obtained from the Internal Revenue Service and, over a number of years projects began to come into being.

The Sioux Empire Safety Village is located on the WH Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls South Dakota and has both premanent and temporary exhibits and special events on the fairgrounds.

Our planned growth shows that in the next five years we will either completely move off the fairgrounds to our own property or build a number of other exhibits onto the property to help the public understand that injuries are not "accidents" and most of the time can be avoided through education, proper engineering and sometimes through enforcement programs.

A short list of our projects to date include:

Power of Fire- Fire Safety In Multiple Languages

Safe House- Home Injury Prevention in Multiple Languages

Driving Simulators for Immigrants and Refugees

Distracted and Impaired Driver Simulators for Youthful Drivers

Each of these projects and many others that are collaborative in nature with other organizations are further explained on our presentation page.
